Inspiration: If I’m being 100% honest, florals intimidate me.
Which is kind of funny, because flowers are where I started.
Back in 2014, I was living in the UK, working on my dissertation, and stressed beyond belief. I picked up a paintbrush almost as an escape, and for a while, florals were my entire world. I could disappear into painting them.
When I moved back to the States, I started making hand-painted floral greeting cards and offering them to people on Facebook. They became surprisingly popular, and I think a little part of me started attaching expectations to flowers.
Maybe that’s why I struggle with them now.
The second I start painting a floral, the perfectionist in me gets loud.
Is this too abstract?
Does this actually look like a flower?
Should it be more realistic?
Did I push it too far?
I can agonize over every petal and every shape.
But I’m starting to realize that maybe the point isn’t to paint flowers exactly as they exist.
Maybe the point is to paint them the way they exist in my world.
