I went to countless doctors and nobody knew how to help me. The diagnosis is an umbrella term that essentially means it’s of an unknown origin and has no cure.

I saw 4 dermatologists. I saw countless dentists. I even saw the University of Michigan Orafacial pain clinic, which was the most dismissive experience I ever had. They recommended I take ashwagandha, which is an herb.

I got patch testing done and that lead to me finding out I’m allergic to about 15 things that I now avoid including cinnamon, fragrance and most metals. I had some dental work changed out that helped as well thanks to my dentist in Seattle identifying it.

Finally, I moved to Portland and saw a mucosal specialist. She diagnosed me with an auto immune disease that attacks the inside of my mouth called Oral Lichen Planus.

It’s not curable, but with certain medications it can be managed to a level that doesn’t leave me grumpy all day from pain.

I’ve been on Plaquenil for 8 months, and although I still have mouth pain every single day, I have a name for why I have this and things like mouth rinses to help manage it.

Resilience, for me, hasn’t meant finding a way to make everything okay. It has meant continuing to ask questions when no one has answers, learning how to care for myself in the middle of uncertainty, and learning how to adapt.

I still live with pain, but I’m no longer searching for a name. Maybe that’s why I return to resilience in my work: not as a neat ending, imperfect act of continuing to make a life that feels like my own despite the obstacles I face.
