How I Saved My Clients Thousands on Framing Their Original Art (Without Sacrificing Quality)

How I Saved My Clients Thousands on Framing Their Original Art (Without Sacrificing Quality)

The Mid-Century Modern Collector’s Guide to Smart Framing

If you’re a mid-century modern homeowner who invests in original art, you already know one truth: there’s no such thing as “cheap” original art — nor should there be.
You’re curating a home, a lifestyle, and often a forever collection.

But here’s what is possible: saving thousands on high-quality framing without compromising craftsmanship, materials, or aesthetics.

This year, two of my collectors purchased large, statement-size original artworks from me. They had high-impact color, geometric abstraction, and museum-quality materials. The kind of art that becomes the anchor of a living room. The kind of art you get lost in.

Both clients loved their new pieces…
Both wanted frames that felt Mid Century Modern and timeless.
Understandably, both were hesitant to spend $2,000–$3,000 on a frame from a traditional framing shop.

So I stepped in and helped them save thousands, quite literally.

The Problem: Premium Art Needs Premium Framing, But Not Premium Prices

If you live in a mid-century modern-style home, you’re used to seeing beautiful, gallery-style framing everywhere.

But here’s the secret people rarely talk about:

High-end framers often mark up frames 200–400%.
Most of the cost isn’t materials — it’s overhead.

You don't want cheap frames.
You want real walnut or maple, not that MDF crap!

So I offered a different strategy, one that I now recommend to all my collectors.

My Proven Method for Affordable, High-End Framing

Step 1: I sourced a small business that makes designer-level frames.

These are not mass-produced frames.
They’re handcrafted, high-quality, real hardwood frames in styles perfect for mid-century modern interiors — especially walnut, which is my favorite. They offer multiple kinds of wood for all styles.

Step 2: My collectors purchased the frame directly.

No middleman markup.
No gallery premium.
Just the real materials at a fair price.

Here’s an example:

Case Study: A 40 x 60 Original Painting

  • Frame material: Real walnut wood

  • Frame cost from small business frame maker: $550 (US shipping included)

  • Comparable cost at a traditional framer: $2,000–$2,500+

That’s a savings of $1,500–$2,000, just for choosing a smarter route.

Step 3: They took the painting + the frame to Michaels.

I know, it sounds almost too simple. But one day when my drill was broken, I brought my own frame and sold painting to Michaels and asked if they could frame my painting with MY frame. They said yes, of course! I had an aha moment....
Michaels has professional framers on staff who will insert your artwork into your ready-made frame for a small fee.

Cost at Michaels?
$25 and up, depending on size.

Cost to have a custom framer do the same thing?
Often hundreds—sometimes over $1,000 for large works.

You Can’t Save Money on Original Art — But You Can Save Money on Framing

This is the part no one says out loud in the “Instagram-perfect, magazine-worthy design world."

Original art holds its value.
It carries emotion, story, and the artist’s vision.
It’s the one piece in a room you shouldn’t try to “get a deal” on.

But framing?
Framing is where savvy collectors can be strategic.

Here’s what I think:

Invest in the art.
Optimize on the framing.

You don’t need an overpriced framer to enjoy a beautifully finished piece on your wall.
You just need the right frame, the right materials, and a professional to assemble it.
