Inspiration:
Minutes after I slipped down my sister's front steps on 12/23/24, my partner and sister rushed to pick me up. I ended up lying on my stomach on her concrete porch, drenched in freezing rain, shivering from adrenaline, fear, and the unforgiving cold of a Michigan winter.
Tears streamed down my face as they comforted me in pain, but I couldn’t help noticing the worried little face of my 6-year-old niece, Isabel, peeking out at us from behind my sister’s winterproofed front door.
Isabel didn't just stand by when she was told she couldn’t come outside. Instead, she sprang into action. A moment later, she reappeared with her hedgehog stuffed animal, her small hands carrying it like an offering, putting it next to my face.
Even in my pain and panic, I remember thinking, That’s so sweet—what a thoughtful kid. But she wasn’t done. Moments later, she returned, this time with the pillow from her bed.
She gently placed it down, determined that my head wouldn’t have to rest on the cold, hard ground.
At just six years old, she couldn’t physically help me, but her big heart and quick thinking found a way to make a difference. Her actions were so pure and so full of love that they left me deeply moved.
I think we all need more of this effortless, thoughtless kindness in our lives—the kind children seem to give so freely. Their selfless acts give me so much hope for the future. It’s healing to witness such pure care and compassion in a world that often feels anything but.
