Though She Be But Little, She is Fierce
24 x 24 x 1.5 inches, acrylic on canvas
Series: This work is from the series “The Future is Feminine” series, which is a series about women’s empowerment.
The saying “Though She Be But Little, She is Fierce” is from Shakespeare’s play, Midsummer Night’s Dream. My Sophomore year in college I took a Shakespeare class where we read all of his works and analyzed them. It would jumpstart my love for analyzing media, and lead me down the path of eventually getting my masters in Film Theory.
The saying itself refers to the character Hermia in the play, who is a young rebellious woman who refuses to marry the man her father wants her to. In Shakespeare’s plays he often has the recurring trope of the woman who doesn’t obey and then is punished for being a rebel. However, in the end of this play, Hermia eventually gets a happy ending, but not before one of her friends calls her “little, but fierce.”
In contemporary terms, I think of the saying as “she may be small, but don’t underestimate her.” I think of women like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Rosa Parks, Dolly Parton, women who truly made a difference in this world. This quote also makes me think of my own mother who is very well known in her field for her research and understanding for her patients.
Dont underestimate us women, because we are changing the world.
