INSPIRATION: Astronomy has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I loved learning about stars, constellations, and planets. In high school and college, I even took astronomy classes at planetariums because I wanted to understand more about what I was looking at. Now I have a telescope of my own, and on clear nights I still love going outside to look at the moon, planets, and stars.
There is something about looking at the night sky that has always made whatever is happening in my own life feel a little smaller for a moment. It reminds me how enormous the world is and how much exists beyond what I can see right in front of me.
That feeling became part of the inspiration for North Star.
When I paint, I often feel like I’m creating places that don’t exist anywhere except in my imagination. This piece started to feel like one of those places, somewhere between a landscape and a constellation.
The title made me think about the actual North Star and the way people have used it for centuries to find their direction. I liked the idea of that becoming something more personal too.
I think we all have things that help bring us back to ourselves when life feels uncertain. It could be a person, a place, a dream, or simply something that reminds you who you are and where you want to go.
For me, North Star is about that feeling.
It is a little reminder that even when you are not completely sure where you are headed, you can still have something worth looking forward to.
